emo to be made illegal in russia

"Legislation is currently being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.

The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these "dangerous teen trends" encourage depression and suicide.

The legislation was presented last month at a hearing held by the State Durma, where critics claimed that the "negative" emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.

Emo kids were described as teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that "cover half the face", reports The Guardian

The weekend saw mass protests by Russian emo kids." [nme]

galapagos ready in dumbo

"Galapagos has officially set up shop and opened their doors in DUMBO, though a full schedule isn't planned to go into effect until September. The beautiful new space, located between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges on the corner Water and Main Streets, can hold 175 seated and around 230 standing. Director Robert Elmes told us that the new arts space will continue to focus on the cultural ecosystem by hosting "theater, dance, performance art, cinema, puppetry, classical and world music, lectures, literary events and fundraising events for non profits and local cultural groups." There will be no rock concerts, as there were previously at the Williamsburg space." [gothamist]

the real world coming to red hook?

"Here we go again. That report that Real World Brooklyn was going to be filming in Carroll Gardens after all? Never mind. It turns out that Real World turned down the building (again) last week because "it didn't make logistical sense" to either the producers or the developer And, now, just into the inbox the brand new Real World news/rumor: It's going to be Red Hook. Per an email with the subject line "Real Whirrled Confirmed":
Construction of a make-shift apartment has begun on the upstairs end of Pier-41 (204 Van Dyke Street) as of last week. The space had been previously been a catering and event hall until a Nor'Easter damaged the access pier leading to the space back in the '80's and most recently in the workings to reopen as the same at the hands of River Cafe's Buzzy O'Keefe. The space had most recently been used a few years ago when it was built-out as a bar/night club for the Will Smith movie, Hitch." [curbed]
